HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. (News Release) – The Helena-West Helena Police Department, along with the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Unit, have made several arrests in connection with this past weekend’s shootings that left one man dead and another still listed in critical condition in a Memphis Hospital.
Virgil Green, chief of police with the Helena-West Helena Police Department, said the two shootings occurred in the early morning hours on Saturday morning. A graduation party was being held in the area of Perry and Oakland. Around 12 a.m., officers arrived at the location due to the large crowd of people attending the party.
Once on scene, a disturbance occurred inside the building as people began to run outside. Several fights occurred, and within minutes officers heard one gunshot. They found one gunshot victim lying in the parking lot. That individual was later identified as Savon Bridget, a 22-year-old man from Helena-West Helena.
Officers attempted to render aid to the gunshot victim while other officers began searching for the shooter. Green stated the scene became very chaotic with so many individuals around the gunshot victim. An ambulance was called for, but due to the delay, the gunshot victim was transported by private vehicle to the Helena Hospital. The driver of the vehicle who transported Bridget was identified as Markius Carpenter of Helena-West Helena.
With the assistance of the Arkansas State Police CID Agents, investigators have determined that Carpenter left the hospital in the same White Tahoe that transported Bridget. After leaving the Helena Regional Hospital, investigators believe Carpenter was in the area of Kentucky and Cheerydale in West Helena where the second shooting occurred at around 1:42 a.m. A citizen called 911 after hearing about 5 gunshots in the area.
Just minutes later at 1:49 a.m., officers who were already at the hospital saw a White Chevy Tahoe pull up with a gunshot victim who has been identified as Markius Carpenter. He was later airlifted in critical condition to a Memphis hospital suffering from several gunshot wounds.
During the investigators’ interviews, an alleged suspect named Jeremy Glass AKA “PEE-WEE” was identified as the driver of a vehicle where it’s alleged two other suspects named Cordario Morant and Jeremy Morant AKA “ICKY” were shooting at the White Chevy Tahoe.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Glass, who is alleged to have been involved in the shooting on Kentucky and Cherrydale:
Glass faces charges of conspiracy and tampering with physical evidence. Glass is already a convicted felon.
Based upon witness information to investigators, it’s alleged that Cordario Morant is the suspect who fatality shot Bridget at the graduation party located at Perry and Oakland Ave.
Cordario Morant faces charges of capital murder, terroristic act, tampering with physical evidence and possession of firearms by certain person.
Jeremy Morant, the brother of Cordario Morant, was also present at the scene of the homicide, and he faces charges of conspiracy and tampering with evidence.
Investigators have arrested Glass and are searching for the two Morant brothers.
They believe these two brothers may be in the town of Elaine, which is located in Phillips County about 20 miles south of Helena-West Helena.
The two suspects could be armed.
Anyone with information on their location is encouraged to call the Helena-West Helena Police Department at (870) 572-3441.
