Charges upgraded, no bond set for double homicide suspect

BENTON, Ark. — Luke Talbert is now facing upgraded charges of capital murder and no bond after allegedly shooting two people.

Talbert, 29, of Benton has been accused of fatally shooting his brother and sister-in-law, on Tuesday, October 29.

Police say that Talbert was originally charged with two counts of first-degree murder and the charges were upgraded.

Talbert’s next court date is set for December 17.

BENTON, Ark. — Police in Benton are investigating the city’s first double homicide in nearly 15 years, and the brother of one of the victims is in custody on murder charges, authorities say.

Mark Talbert, 26 and his wife, Maegan, 26, were both found shot dead inside a home on Freeman Street late Tuesday night, according to police.

Mark’s brother, Lucas Talbert, 29, was at the scene when officers arrived and was taken into custody.

Police were notified about the crime after someone called 911, but police would not identify who made that call.

“It’s a quiet residential area that typically we don’t ever have anything much ever going on,” Capt. Kevin Russell of the Benton Police Dept. said about the neighborhood where it happened.

Detectives have yet to pinpoint a motive for the suspected killings, according to police.

“You know, that’s something we’re still trying to figure out,” Russell says.

“Detectives have been working very diligently on the case right now, and that’s something that I’m sure they’ll be able to determine as the case proceeds.”

Benton investigators have made a plea for more information from anyone who noticed anything in the area, which sits just north of the Benton Event Center.

“Even if it’s something that they don’t think was important that maybe they saw that maybe preceded this, maybe even days before if they saw anything,” Russell says.

The deaths mark the second and third homicides of the year in Benton, police say.

BENTON, Ark. — Benton Police Department responded to a Freeman Street residence at approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday for a disturbance.

Upon arrival, officers located 26-year-old Mark Talbert and 23-year-old Maegan Talbert, both of Benton, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

Luke Talbert, 29, also of Benton, was taken into custody without incident and charged with two counts of Murder in the First Degree, Class Y felonies.

BNPD Criminal Investigations Division detectives responded to the scene and assumed the investigation, which remains ongoing.
