DEWITT, Ark.– Two teens sit in jail after police said a drive-by shooting almost hit 2 kids in a car.
The drive-by shooting happened in Dewitt around 3:45 Thursday afternoon on Fairview Circle.
Dewitt PD confirmed one man in his 20’s was shot in the chest.
It happened near the local hospital and the health department office in town.
Quartisha Clay’s 9-year-old shots hoops while his 3-year-old sister showed us her necklace outside their Dewitt duplex Friday.
“He (9-year-old) was literally getting ready to go outside and play and that’s when we heard the shots,” Clay said.
They live on the same circle where police chief Greg Miller told us a 16-year-old shot a man in the chest during a drive-by shooting.
Chief Miller said, ‘We’ve tightened our patrol up in the neighborhoods where all this is happening.”
The chief said he believes the suspect and the victim had previous altercations.
“In this neighborhood it doesn’t happen out here,” Clay told us.
A woman who was in the car that was shot sent us photos.
Miller said the victim was getting in the car when the suspect starting shooting.
“There were shell casing there. There was one right over here. One down by the light pole there,” the chief said as he pointed at areas yards apart.
Bullets narrowly missed two kids ages 1 and 6 who were sitting in the back seat of the car , according to police.
Clay said, “It’s scary because I mean my son could’ve been out here.”
A bullet hit the tire of a car parked next door at the health department.
There was only one victim despite the numerous shots fired, according to police.
There’s a lot of kids in this neighborhood that go outside and play literally every single day,” Clay said.
The mother said she’s comforted her kids.
She said, “He (her son) was halfway scared to come outside for the rest of the day. I mean he eventually came back out. But I mean he’s looking around.”
Chief Miller made it clear that violence will not be tolerated.
“If we have to we’ll hunt you all night like we did last night,” he said.
Arkansas County Sheriff deputies helped track down the 2 suspects in the case.
Police said both suspects are 16-years-old.
The PD said one is the suspected driver and the other is the suspected shooter.
Chief Miller said the suspected driver is on an investigative hold in jail Thursday while the suspected shooter has been arrested.
We’ve learned the shooting victim has been released from the hospital.
