“Every Student Succeeds Act” Would Enable School Gun Training

The ‘Every Student Succeeds Act’ would allow schools to use federal funds to arm teachers. In Education Secretary Betsy Devos proposal she wants school to have the choice of using some federal funding to pay for firearm training.

Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee (R) believes states get to choose how they use the money.
“As I read the law, title 4 specifically gives states the decision about spending their money “

Democrats Senator Patty Murray of Washington on the other hand argue that is not what the money is for.
“(Federal funding) was intended to be used for purposes like helping more children get access to mental health care, or providing additional programming in stem or the arts, not for purchasing weapons”.

Right now 14 states including Arkansas allow teachers to carry guns, and Florida votes next month to become the 15th state.

Another 16 states give local school boards the authority to decide whether school staff can carry guns.

Legislation to arm teachers is pending in 8 states.
