Expect mosquitoes to arrive early this year

LITTLE ROCK, AR — Get your bug spray ready because Central Arkansas’ mosquito problem is on its way. Entomologists say the current weather conditions are causing mosquitoes to survive.

Unlike recent seasons, this winter is proving to be a lot easier to handle not only for humans, but also the mosquitoes.

“Normally insects are killed by cold weather and freezes. So we are anticipating an above average year; especially in the first part of the season with insect activity,” said University of Georgia professor David Buntin.

Sunday, the Entomological Society of America met in Little Rock to talk about many topics including how the weather is affecting the insect population.

Researchers say they don’t know when we will have to start using skin protection against mosquitoes.

“it’s going to be a lot depending on rainfall and they can breed pretty quickly if there is any standing water,” said University of Arkansas professor Rob Wiedenmann.
