CONWAY- Faulkner County Sheriff’s Deputy Hans Fifer died in the line of duty in April during training exercises. Now, his friends and colleagues are organizing a special event to honor him and raise funds for his family.

Heath Shearon says his brother-in-law loved people. “Nobody loved harder than Hans in my opinion. He was kind of a hero of mine.”

That’s why Shearon says Fifer got into law enforcement. Not for the pay or the recognition, but to help people in the community. “A lot of people loved Hans.”

Fifer leaves behind a wife and two young daughters. “Those are my nieces and goddaughters and I want to make sure they’re ok.”

The Hans Fifer Memorial Log Carry 5k is not an ordinary 5k. It’s a group challenge where people carry a 35 foot log along the way. “The whole goal is to not let it touch the ground and when its over we’re going to set the light pole back up and put a plague on it with Hans’ name.”

Fifer’s name will also be added to the Faulkner County Courthouse Memorial Wall, honoring those who have fallen in the line of duty. The Executive Director for the Arkansas Division of the Southern States Police Benevolent Association says all officers understand it could be any one of them at anytime. Sam Keller says that’s why the organization tries to help families of fallen officers. Keller says all law enforcement feel the loss when someone pays the ultimate price. He says it’s a dangerous job serving and protecting. “When we go to work it may be the last time we kiss our wife and kids goodbye.”

All proceeds of the Hans Fifer Memorial 5k Log Carry benefit Hans’ widow and two children. The event is Saturday, May 25th. Registration is at 8am at the UCA campus. The run starts at 10am. The cost is $40 to participate.
