LEWISVILLE, Ark. – An elderly man and his daughter have died in a house fire in Southwest Arkansas.
Arkansas State Police identify the victims as Roosevelt Johnson, 82, and Lois Johnson, 58, who lived in Lewisville (Lafayette County).
The blaze was reported around 2 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of 3rd and Warren streets.
Neighbor Anthony Jackson woke up to a popping sound and ran next door where he saw the back of the Johnson’s house engulfed in flames.
“I think it was that window busting,” he said. “I ran and beat on the door and didn’t get a response.”
Jackson says he broke the back door but still could not get in.
“That was the door, and that’s where her body was right there,” he continued. “She fell right at the door and that’s what that door was up against. That’s the reason I couldn’t get it open.”
The blaze destroyed the Johnson’s home as well as Jackson’s. The neighbor says he feels blessed to be alive.
“Thought I accumulated a lot of stuff but that can be replaced but I can’t, my neighbors can’t, so I’m just thankful,” he said. “Everybody did all they could, It just wasn’t enough…I’ve been knowing them all my life, they were good people though.”
The fire’s cause is not yet known.
