FOX16’s Kevin Kelly participates in Hot Spring Village triathlon

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, AR – FOX16’s Kevin Kelly participated in the first ever TRI-the-Village Sprint Triathlon held in Hot Springs Village on June 9. The event included a 500-yard swim at Balboa Lake, a 13.5 mile cycle ride and a 3.5 mile run on Magellan Golf Course cart path, and ended at Balboa Pavilion with an awards presentation and celebratory after party sponsored by Newk’s Express Café.

According to a release, the 137 athletes participating in the triathlon ranged in age from 17 to 75 and represented six states: Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Missouri and Louisiana.

The overall winner of the triathlon was Alex Goff, 21, of Conway. A student at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Goff participated in his first triathlon last summer, and in May, he qualified for the U.S. Championship scheduled for September in Des Moines. His total time to complete the TRI-the-Village course was 1:02. The second and third place winners overall were 17-year-old Clayton Wilkins (1:11) from Paron, and 27-year-old Patrick Garvin (1:13) of Little Rock.

Nineteen people from Hot Springs Village participated in the triathlon, 12 of whom won medals:
Alan Trippel (3rd Place, Male 60-64); Robert Pickett (1st Place, Male 70+); Dale Flory (3rd Place, Female 50-54); Charlene Reinsch (1st Place, Female 55-59); Nicholas Sarver, David Specht and Amanda Sarver (1st Place, Relay Team); Nicole Good and Jennifer Rose (2nd Place, Relay Team); Judith Landes, Phillip Stegall and Dottie Burke (3rd Place, Relay Team). Village triathlon athletes also included Amanda Bean, David Crabtree, Jeff Hollansworth, Angie and David Morrow, Dane Nielsen and Jeffrey Schlosberg.

DLT Events, headed by Fred Phillips, served as event manager for the triathlon. About 140 Villagers volunteered to assist with the event in a variety of areas such as water safety, ham radio coverage, and guides on the bike and run courses.
