Kenya Brevard, 38, of Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A local woman is behind bars on a charge of manslaughter after her six-year-old nephew died in a shooting.

Kenya Brevard, 38, was arrested after the Wednesday afternoon incident on Lamar Street.

Family friends tell us the victim was Eron Burks.

Police believe the child accidentally shot himself after finding the gun in a car.

According to the report, Brevard and her 13-year-old daughter had gotten out of the car while the six-year-old stayed inside.

Police say when Brevard returned, she found him lying in the backseat. She told officers she did not see or hear anyone around the vehicle.

While feeding dogs, the 13-year-old heard her mother crying and yelling. When she came out, she found her mother with the child.

He was taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in critical condition and died a short time later.

The shooting happened shortly after 4 p.m., according to the Little Rock Police Department.

A neighbor told us that she saw a woman screaming and asking for help immediately after the incident.

The original call to authorities said that the child shot himself.

Early in the investigation police said the shooting appeared to be accidental but that there could be criminal charges.
