LEAD HILL, AR — A local police chief is facing felony charges after being accused of abusing his power for personal gain.

According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Arkansas State Police (ASP) assisted in arresting Lead Hill Police Chief Kenny Barnes at City Hall on Monday.

BCSO says while off duty, Barnes allegedly went to a person’s house in Diamond City acting as though he was conducting an official investigation, then seized some firearms from that resident.

Further investigation revealed that Barnes had sold a number of those seized guns to different people in the community for his own personal gain, according to BCSO.

Barnes was charged with felony theft of property, abuse of public trust, release or disclosure to unauthorized person and abuse of office, and had bond set at $75,000.

BCSO says the case is still under investigation, and anyone who may have information about any similar crimes is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at 870-741-8404, or email them at detectdivision@boonesheriff.com.
