Original story:

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. – U.S. Marshals are looking for two escaped inmates.

They say Wesley Gullett, 30, and Christopher Sanderson, 34 escaped from the Jefferson County Detention Center.

Marshals got the call around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods told us today that just a few days ago two other inmates breached the jail but did not make it off the grounds before being caught.

We also spoke to people who live in the area.

“It’s scary, it really is,” says Lanisha Hogan.

She lives near the jail and was startled to learn about the escape.

“That is crazy! I thought their security would go very far. I didn’t know that it could be that easy for someone to get out like that,” she adds.

Sheriff Woods says Gullett and Sanderson escaped from a pod only used to house inmates for the U.S. Marshals.

“That pod area holds a maximum of 17 detainees and the count was off by two and that’s what alerted us that hey, we’ve got these two people missing,” he explains.

Woods says the inmates were able to detect vulnerabilities in the jail and exploited that to ultimately break out.

“I want to be honest with you, it comes back down to complacency. It comes down to just being lazy and not paying attention to what we’re doing,” the sheriff continues.

Gullett is listed as president of the New Aryan Empire, a white supremacist gang allegedly responsible for multiple acts of violence. Sheriff Woods says Gullett and Sanderson knew each other from the outside.

Woods says the pods where the two were housed were checked twice on Tuesday but not well enough.

“In one of the pods that the two inmates escaped from there was actually a dummy found,” Woods says.

He says it doesn’t appear the two had help from the inside but there is an internal investigation underway.

Meanwhile, people like Hogan are still alarmed.

“There’s a lot of people that could be in danger because of this,” she says.

Officials say they don’t believe the escapees are still in Jefferson County.

Both men were in jail on a federal indictment.
