Case file reveals details in examiner & patient escape

Local News

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – In the case file, for the first time, we’re getting a look at photos from when Michelle Messer was arrested in Las Vegas with Cory Chapin, the man who police say she helped escape from the Arkansas State Hospital.

We’re also learning more from text messages she spent to her friends, right before authorities believe she went on the run with Chapin.

Just last week Michelle Messer pleaded guilty to tampering with physical evidence and aiding an unauthorized departure related to that March 2018 escape.

In Messer’s case file, investigators also gathered surveillance photos from locations where Messer and Chapin showed up while on the run.

In one note we obtained, a teller at a bank described Messer as distraught while making a transaction and says she asked for a map of the State of Arkansas.

And in a text message that one of Messer’s friends showed investigators–that friend says in the moments she initially went missing, she sent a message stating, “tell my parents I’m perfectly fine and safe and to go tell them in person.”

Messer pleaded guilty and received five months probation, more than a year after this all unfolded last spring.
