Chenal Country Club to host 113th Southern Amateur Golf Championship

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (News release) – Chenal Country Club is proud to present the 113th Southern Amateur Championship when it returns to Little Rock July 17-20, 2019. The storied tournament will be played on Chenal Country Club’s Founders Course. The Club hosted the Southern Amateur in 2012 on the Bear Den Course, which was won by Peter Williamson of Hanover, New Hampshire. This year’s event is presented by Chenal Properties, Inc. The Southern Golf Association sanctions the Southern Amateur Championship and the Southern Junior Championship, which was also hosted by Chenal Country Club in 2007.

The Southern Am is contested annually as it moves about the South to some of the most prestigious and noteworthy courses. The Championship has been played at The Honors Course, Pinehurst, Belle Meade Country Club, The Homestead, East Lake Country Club, The Country Club of Virginia, Bay Hill Club, New Orleans Country Club, The Country Club of North Carolina and most recently at The Club at Olde Stone. Past winners include such notables as Bobby Jones, Freddie Haas, Gay Brewer, Vinny Giles, Lanny Wadkins, Ben Crenshaw, Bill Rogers, Bob Tway, Webb Simpson, and Kyle Stanley, and from Little Rock, Alex Carpenter.

The Southern Am is ranked as one of the top amateur events internationally and attracts as many as 700 entries. The field is narrowed to 168 through exemptions for the most accomplished players, and through a series of qualifying matches at Clubs around the South. A Monday qualifying event is hosted at Chenal Country Club during tournament week as well.

Chenal Country Club was founded in 1990 and is located in the rolling hills of Chenal Valley in Little Rock. The Club is built around two championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, both of which are highly ranked in the state and have also received national accolades. The Founders Course plays at 7,115 yards. Grass types include: tees and fairways covered with Meyer Zoysia; putting greens are TifEagle Bermuda. The course slope rating is 74.7/139. Chenal Country Club is located at 10 Chenal Club Blvd. in Little Rock, Arkansas.
