Update: Clean-up continues after a historical building caught fire in Walnut Ridge

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ark. – Over in Walnut Ridge, cleanup continues tonight after a fire downtown.

The Lawrence County Library suffered extensive smoke damage. As workers continue to pick up the pieces of the demolished building, work has just begun here at the Lawrence County Library, where they received minimal damage from the fire.

“There was fire in the wall, they took out some of the sheetrock there, so there’s some wall damage, there’s some damage to the roof, as well as some water damage where they had to put it out,” said Ashley Burris the Director of the Lawrence County Library.

The fire spread to the library in a short amount of time and it was contained quickly. Power was restored to the building last night, and a crew from All-Clean has been there all day working to clean and repair the damage that is there.

“They’ve got their chemical sponges, they started with the ceiling, working from the top down, and everything has to be wiped off and cleaned. In a library with a lot of materials: books, magazines, DVDs, I mean, we’ve got all kinds of materials in here and that’s going to take quite a bit of time,” said Burris.

The library will be closed all next week as cleaning continues. Their internet and phone lines were knocked down as a result of the fire, so the majority of online resources, including eBooks and audiobooks, are currently inaccessible through the weekend at least.

The election equipment was also moved to another location with the plan to check the equipment next week to make sure everything works.

Buris encourages everyone to be patient with the process. She says the library is working as quickly as possible over the next few weeks to get everything back up and running.
