HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – A local man has been arrested after his SUV sideswiped a school bus on Thursday and sent a teenager on board to the hospital.

The Hot Springs Police Department (HSPD) says the 17-year-old student suffered minor injuries in the incident that happened around noon Thursday on the Bypass (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway).

Their injuries were described as not life-threatening.

The HSPD says officers were called to the scene to the eastbound side of the expressway, on a report of a red Hyundai Santa Fe going eastbound in the westbound lanes. A short time later police received another call reporting that the vehicle had struck a Lakeside School bus on the expressway at Higdon Ferry Road.

John Ochsner, 75, of Hot Springs was arrested for DWI #1, Refusal to submit to a breath test and drinking in public. Ochsner was also charged with Careless and Prohibited Driving and Driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

Ochsner was being held Thursday afternoon at the Garland County Detention Center on a $2,000 bond.

The Lakeside School District posted additional information on its Facebook page after the incident:

“A Lakeside school bus was involved in an accident this afternoon 1/25/18. Our driver was not at fault, a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on the bypass struck the bus. There was one student on board and the family has been notified. As a precaution, the student was transported to the hospital to be evaluated.”
