Update: NLRPD investigating officer-involved shooting near Riverfront, man identified

Saturday UPDATE:

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The man who was shot by police has been identified as 36-year-old Walter Means of North Little Rock.

He remains in critical condition.

UPDATE:

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Police are investigating after an officer was involved in a shooting with a suspect near Riverfront and Broadway in North Little Rock.

Police say that around 4:26 pm, they received a call from a railroad employee that a man was lying on the ground with his head on the railroad tracks that cross over Broadway Blvd. near Pike Avenue.

When Officers approached the man they say he displayed a hatchet.

Police say that at least two officers fired their weapons during this incident and the man was struck by their gunfire.

Authorities say he was given immediate medical attention by the officers on scene and then by responding medical personnel.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he is considered to be in critical condition, according to police.

Authorities have not yet released any information on the condition of the suspect in the incident.

Police did tell FOX 16 that the officer was not injured in the shooting.

Officials did note that they do not believe there is any immediate danger to the public.

Officers are still working to determine what instigated the incident.

FOX 16 has a crew headed to the scene and will have updates as soon as they are available.
