PULASKI COUNTY, Ark. – Officials at the Pulaski County Special School District have launched an investigation after a viral Facebook post claims a class project at the Sylvan Hills freshman campus highlighted a racial slur.
A woman’s viral Facebook post condemning the project reveals an image of a document titled “Offical N-word Pass” surrounded by photos of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama.
The Facebook post, which has been shared nearly 2,000 times, claims it happened at a class at the Sylvan Hills freshman campus.
When asked about the claims, a spokesperson for the PCSSD referred us to a statement, confirming an investigation is underway. In a statement posted to the Sylvan Hills High School Facebook page, PCSSD states:
“It has come to our attention that a class project at the North campus was not handled according to PCSSD policies, beliefs and code of conduct. This is our only comment at this time as we continue to investigate the matter.”
“I think it’s offensive,” Dundra Vines says.
Vines has a brother who goes to the Sylvan Hills Freshman Academy. She saw the viral Facebook post about the project for the first time on Tuesday.
“No matter what race you are, I don’t think the N word should be going around.”
It’s unclear what the class project was about or how many students were involved.
The viral Facebook post claims it was an entrepreneurial class with a project about a product, but those details have not yet been independently confirmed.
