POPE COUNTY, AR – An investigation is underway after the wrong jail inmate is released.

In a news release issued on Monday, the Pope County Sheriff’s Office said it happened on June 29 and that the man was back in custody by the next day.

The agency says that Jeffery Hale, 43, impersonated the other inmate, signing the release documents as that inmate.

Both men have the same first name and they were both in the booking area waiting for processing, the sheriff’s office said.

The error was quickly realized and Hale was found at a home in Pope County about 24 hours later and arrested without incident.

The investigation into Hale’s release continues and disciplinary action is being taken by the detention center administration.

Additional charges are being filed against Hale as a result of this incident.
