LITTLE ROCK, AR- The Better Business Bureau is warning you of a scam that’s already targeted a handful of Arkansas victims. Scammers claiming to be from the Publishers Clearing House are calling people saying they’ve won a new car and some cash. Whoever is behind the scam is also asking Arkansans to buy a prepaid card in order to claim their prize.

President and CEO Janet Robb said one woman lost $2,000 dollars to the scam this week.

“That money’s gone. She can’t get it back,” said Better Business Bureau CEO and President Janet Robb.

Con Artists are calling many Arkansans including Robb who recently got a call from an unrecognized number from Jamaica. They told her she won a new car and money.

“Of course I pretended to act very excited, come on bring me my check, I’m waiting for you,” explained Robb.

Robb said the man told her he was on his way to see her, but in order to receive the funds, she needed to go to a store like Walmart to buy a prepaid card and load it with $450 dollars.

“At that point he said I’m going to need you to read me the numbers on the back of the card, so that’s when they made the switch. I was almost hoping they would send someone to this location,” said Robb.

As planned, Robb fed him wrong numbers and tried to stall the man from calling other potential victims. After 45 minutes on the phone, the man eventually told Robb she couldn’t get her prize since the numbers weren’t accurate.

“So I asked him how much his cut was off that 450 dollars and he pretended not to understand the question and then got vulgar and hung up,” said Robb.

Robb said the old rule is if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is. You definitely want to hold on to your money. She said you should never have to pay for anything you win. Also, phone numbers can be deceiving. Some con artists make it look like they’re calling from anywhere in the world. If you think these offers are suspicious, don’t hesitate to call the Better Business Bureau.
