BAUXITE, AR — June 1 is the deadline for parents to request a transfer made possible throught the state’s school choice law.
The legislature made changes to the law to allow school transfers with no regard to race.
Since the Legislature passed this revised school choice law, some school districts like the Bauxite School District are preparing for high enrollments since parents have fewer boundaries when it comes to their child’s school. Bauxite school leaders said parents have been applying for school choice requests in record numbers as a result of the revised law.
The district has already seen growth in previous years. As a result, the district will be adding on to its elementary and middle school.
Next year, they will open a charter school.
School leaders believe high test scores and small class sizes make them attractive.
“It’s not necessarily they don’t like the school district where they are. They just find we’re a better fit for their kid,” said Kim Arnold, spokeswoman for the district.
