Shop Secure Program Brings More Protection for the Hoidays

CONWAY, AR — Expect to see more navy uniforms popping up around Conway’s popular shopping areas this holiday season.

The police department will get an extra $50,000 to cut back on crime.

Over the years more and more people are checking out the unique shops in Conway.

So to keep everyone safe, the city council approved money for the Shop Secure program this holiday season.

Four officers will be doing extra patrols around the busiest areas including downtown, Conway Commons and Conway Towne Center on 65 North.

Police will be looking for people casing cars and keeping an eye out for suspected shoplifters.

We talked to employees at E. Leigh’s — in downtown Conway — they’re thankful for this program.

As a small business…stolen merchandise can make a huge impact.

Employee Claire Rogers said, “It makes it harder for us because we think we have done something wrong. We try and look and try to find it (the merchandise).”

The extra patrols will begin with the Thanksgiving holiday and continue through the week after Christmas.

The $50,000 for the Shop Secure program comes from the city’s general fund.

It’s used to pay for officers’ overtime.
