SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL) – A local police officer has died after being shot multiple times as she prepared to report to work.
The Shreveport Police Department says Chatéri Payne, 22, was gunned down shortly before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday outside a home in the 1600 block of Midway Avenue.
At the time of the shooting Officer Payne, who was in uniform, was headed in to work her overnight shift, said Shreveport Police Chief Ben Raymond in a Thursday morning news conference (see full video below or click here). She died after being taken to Ochsner LSU Health hospital.
“There was a child located at the home where the shooting occurred,” Raymond added.
Payne graduated the police academy in November 2018.
“There was excitement in her eyes about her chosen career to serve others. She willingly took the oath to serve Shreveport,” continued Raymond.
Raymond added they are still looking for those responsible for Payne’s murder. A witness on scene was questioned but they are not in custody.
“We will follow every lead and work to identify and apprehend the coward or cowards for the brutal murder of Officer Payne,” Raymond said.
