NORMAN, OK – The Oklahoma Sooners put together two three-run innings on Tuesday night to down the University of Central Arkansas Bears 7-0 in non-conference action at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners (19-12) scored three in the third and fourth innings and a combination of four pitchers held the Bears (14-9) to just five hits on the night. Senior designated hitter Brad Dillenberger went 2 for 4 and was the only UCA player with multiple hits. UCA freshman starter Corey Herndon, in the first start of his career, allowed 5 hits and 3 runs in 2 1/3 innings of work and took the loss.
UCA loaded the bases in the top of the first against OU starter Adam Choplick with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch, but he worked out of the jam and was dominant after that. Choplick allowed just three hits an struck out 10 over six innings. UCA struck out 14 times on the night.
The Bears also committed three errors and left nine runners on base. Senior infielder/designated hitter Nate Ferrell left the game in the eighth inning after an injury that occurred on an awkward slide into second base.
The Sooners got home runs from Kolbey Carpenter and Chris Shaw among their 14 hits. Shaw’s solo shot in the eighth gave the Sooners their final run.
The Bears hit the road to Carbondale, Ill., for a non-conference series at Southern Illinois this weekend. Action begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
