OneRock Awards Banquet Honors LRSD Student Athletes

LITTLE ROCK, AR – Student-athletes representing all sports were celebrated during the Little Rock School District’s (LRSD) second annual OneRock Awards program at Children’s Hall.  “Athletes of the Year” for various sports, the overall “LRSD Athlete of the Year” – male and female, “LRSD Coach of the Year” – male and female, along with “Fan Favorites” and “Media Favorites” were named.

The name for the celebration, OneRock, is adopted from a slogan used by LRSD Athletic Foundation Director Dr. Fitz Hill last year to unite sixth grade football teams across the District with a common purpose – many schools, ultimately ‘One Rock’.

The ESPY-styled OneRock Awards program included dinner, followed by the ceremony highlighting the accomplishments of student-athletes, and culminated with the announcement of the District’s overall “Athletes of the Year” and “Coaches of the Year.”

“We are excited to host this event for a second year,” said LRSD Superintendent Mike Poore. “We are proud to honor the exemplary athletes from all of our high schools. This celebration ties into the rich tradition of amazing performances by our students and a storied history of outstanding coaches.”

Winners received rock-shaped glass awards that have been created especially for the celebration by local artist James Hayes of James Hayes Art Glass. Nominations for OneRock have been solicited since February 2018 via social media with posters using the hashtag #LRSD1Rock. Honorees, comprised of female and male high school athletes, were chosen for each of the major sports categories by a selection committee, and “Fan Favorites” from elementary – high school will be selected by the public who cast their ballots on the OneRock Contest Facebook page earlier this month.  Local sports anchors were also invited to recognize their favorites.

“We are proud to put the spotlight back on the ‘Rock’, #LRSDontheRise” Poore shared.
