Mena Class of 2021 tight end Mason Brotherton has turned in a couple of good performances in recent days.
He pitched a no-hitter against Hope on April 5 according to Easton Leonard of The Mena Star. Brotherton struck out nine in the 11-1 run-rule win over the Bobcats.
In addition, Brotherton squatted 465 with ease at a lift-a-thon this past weekend. Brotherton, 6-4, 235, caught 27 passes for 476 yards and two touchdowns as a sophomore despite missing some games at the beginning of the season due to an injury.
He went to a Prospect Day at Arkansas on Jan. 26.
He was offered by Memphis on Dec. 14. It was his first offer, but certainly won’t be the last. He visited the Tigers on Feb. 9 for an unofficial visit.
Luke Jones Update
Former Pulaski Academy offensive lineman Luke Jones announced recently he was leaving Notre Dame where he spent his freshman season in 2018.
There’s little doubt that Jones will come back to play at Arkansas where he had given a verbal commitment prior to the coaching change. Jones said recently he was interested in Arkansas for sure.
Sources indicate that Jones and Arkansas are still just working on some final details of the transfer. Arkansas has two scholarships available in the Class of 2019.
Transfer quarterbacks Ben Hicks and Nick Starkel are on scholarship. Both are grad transfers. Former Arizona State running back Trelon Smith and UTSA kicker Jared Sackett have also announced transfers to Arkansas, but will have to sit out the 2019 season. Their scholarship status is unknown at this time.
It appears Jones will get one of the two remaining and then the other likely will go to a linebacker. If not a linebacker, then probably a defensive back.
Jones, 6-5, 303, was a center at Notre Dame. He will have to sit out the 2019 season unless he is granted a waiver from the NCAA for immediate eligibility.
Springdale Har-Ber 2021 tight end Errington McRae visited Memphis this past weekend for an unofficial visit.
McRae, 6-3, 230, was the only sophomore in Arkansas’ largest classification to start in both football and basketball. In football in 2018, McRae caught 12 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns.
Thanks @MemphisFB and all of the coaching staff for having me today. Truly enjoyed myself and will definitely be back‼️@CoachNorvell @Coach_Tokarz @ARFBALLRANKINGS #StripeUp🐅 pic.twitter.com/TRQe5GgibJ— Errington McRae (@erringtonmcrae) April 13, 2019
McRae has also visited Arkansas for a Prospect Day.
Success in St. Louis
Morrilton 2020 quarterback Jacolby Criswell and Jonesboro defensive end-outside linebacker Jashaud Stewart both turned in great showings at The Opening in St. Louis this past weekend.
Stewart, who is committed to Arkansas, ran a 4.61 in the 40-yard dash and his SPARQ of 131.765 is fifth in the nation at this time.
As a junior, Stewart, 6-2, 220, had 98 tackles, 71 unassisted, 26 tackles for loss, seven sacks, 13 quarterback hurries, one interception, three forced fumbles and four recovered ones.
Criswell, 6-1, 208, also had a big junior season. He completed 89 of 157 passes for 1,350 yards and 14 touchdowns with four interceptions. He also rushed 72 times for 392 yards and four touchdowns.
Criswell earned an Elite 11 Finals Invite.
He also was named the St. Louis Regional MVP.
Criswell holds approximately 16 offers. He has been offered by former Arkansas offensive coordinator Dan Enos at Miami and also likes North Carolina.
