ATLANTA, GA – UALR baseball (10-16, 7-6) took a 12-5 loss at Georgia State (19-13, 8-2) on Saturday afternoon.
Tanner Rockwell was UALR’s best performer as he went 2 for 3 with a three-run homer and four RBIs. James Gillean was the other Trojan with multiple hits as he also went 2 for 3.

UALR began the game with a missile up the middle by Kyle Barret. Barret advanced to third with a one out double to right by Ryan Scott. Barret then scored on a deep sacrifice fly to left by Rockwell to give the Trojans an early 1-0 lead.

Georgia State tied the game in the bottom of the inning. With one out, GSU doubled to left. The Panthers put another runner on after being hit by a pitch. Georgia State then hit an RBI-single to left to score the runner from second and tie the game at 1-1.

UALR took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning with a three-run shot off the bat of Rockwell. Jason Prevatt reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Scott was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Rockwell then launched his second home run of the season over the left field wall to give UALR a three-run lead heading to the bottom of the inning.

With bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 5th, GSU cut the deficit to 4-2 with a misplayed ground ball, scoring the runner from third.

“Once again, we have to eliminate our mistakes,” head coach Chris Curry said. “We didn’t make a lot of errors, but there were mistakes on the field that led to runs and put them into a position to get the big hit.”

Georgia State started the bottom of the 6th with a leadoff home run off the bat of Will Johnson to cut the deficit once again to 4-3. An infield single and another single to center put runners at second and third with no outs. The Panthers then walked to load the bases. A triple down the right field line scored three runs to give Georgia State a 6-4 lead. GSU then hit a single up the middle to bring home the runner from third to make it a 7-4 game.

Dyllon Brownmiller came on for starter Cory Malcom with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Malcom’s final line included 5.1 innings pitched, five strikeouts and seven runs on 10 hits.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Ryan McSwain doubled to left center. Gillean earned his second hit of the day with a single to right center, advancing McSwain to third. Barret then hit a deep sacrifice fly to center to score McSwain and cut Georgia State’s lead to 7-5. Prevatt then singled to left, forcing the Panthers to go to the bullpen for the first time. The Trojans then grounded out to first and left two runners on base.

Georgia had another five-run inning in the bottom of the seventh. Georgia started the frame by walking and advancing to second on a balk. The Panthers laid down a sac bunt to advance the runner to third. After an intentional walk to set up the potential double play, GSU singled to left and scored one. GSU singled once again through the right side, scoring another. The Panthers then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 10-5 game. Matt Rose crushed a two-run homer to left field to increase Georgia State’s lead to 12-5. Stephen Chandler entered the game for the Trojans and stopped the bleeding. After allowing a single, UALR made Georgia State ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

UALR looked for a comeback in the top of the eighth and ninth, but the opportunity never presented itself as Georgia State took the game with a seven-run lead.
“Once again, our bullpen did not keep the game close like we’re used to,” Curry said. “Cory was good through five and pitched himself into some bad counts with some 0-2 to 3-2 counts. Brownmiller just didn’t have it today, and they got the big hit. I liked the way we were swinging the bats by coming out early and scoring, but our bullpen needs to do a better job.”

The Trojans will try to salvage at least one game from the series with Georgia State tomorrow at noon (CT).
